Adoption: An Earthly and Heavenly Gift

As believers there are two forms of adoption: Earthly and Heavenly. Both are beautiful and wonderful and are so needed in life. Adoption here on earth is much needed in todays life because it provides hope for those who are orphans or unwanted children and an option for teen girls, young ladies, and women who have a tough decisions to make and feel trapped. After all, I should know, as someone who is a living testament to the wonders of adoption. Adoption is so important here on earth but there is another adoption that impacts us on a whole other level, heavenly adoption which is eternal.
Some of you may or may not know that I was adopted from birth. It was a completely closed adoption and to this day I do not know anything about who my biological mother is, where she lives, or if she is even still alive. All I know is that for whatever reason this young lady knew she was not equipped to handle taking care of and raising a child. She chose life for me instead of death. For the rest of my life I w ill be thankful to her. Thankful not just for carrying me in her womb, but for giving birth to me and giving me away to a loving family who was willing, able, and eager to care for and raise me as their own. I am thankful to my biological mother for the selfless act she did over 23 years ago and for the gift she gave me when she entrusted me with my adopted parents. As much as I am thankful for my biological mother, I am abundantly thankful for my adopted parents: the ones I call mom and dad. The ones who dealt with me when I was up night after night with colic as a baby, the ones who dealt with my rebeliousness as a teenager, the ones who gave me away to my husband on my wedding day, and finally the ones who are Grandpop and Nonnie to my son, Silas! Without the selflessness of my biological mother, neither my adopted family or I would have had the experiences and joys of life together. Earthly adoption is so life changing and I am so grateful for the life it gave me. As important and life changing as my earthly adoption was, my heavenly adoption is that much more important and life changing! Galatians 4:4-7 says, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying,”Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” God’s good and divine plan from the beginning was to send His only son to die for us all so that He could not just redeem us, but accept us into His family, His kingdom! How amazing is Heavenly adoption?!?! We were slaves and because he has accepted us as His sons and daughters we are heirs! Oh thank you God for your grace and mercy!
Earthly and Heavenly adoption are such monumental gifts that are bestowed upon us. I know that not everyone has experienced earthly adoption. It’s just not possible. However, Heavenly adoption is something that anyone can experience. When Jesus died on the cross and redeemed us He made that possible, but we must believe in Him, repent and turn from our sins, and strive our best to walk in obedience. Might we do those things so that we can be called His sons and daughters and become heirs of the kingdom?

  1. What a beautiful post! I love how you are grateful to all of your parents! I hear of other adopted kids who get so upset abut why they weren't wanted, but you focused on the beauty of adoption and how it can be such a blessing for people. Especially spiritual adoption 🙂
