A Biblical Look Into The 7 Deadly Sins Series: Envy

Envy

So, one of the 7 deadly sins is envy, and if you are being completely honest with yourself then you know that you have struggled with this before, if you aren’t struggling with it in life right NOW! So, before I get into what the bible says about envy, I want to define and discuss it a little, and get a little personal. So, lets start with defining envy.

Envy: A feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck (very first definition when you Google, “Define envy”).

In living in the US and in a day and age that enough just never seems to be enough it is so easy to live in a constant state of envy. No matter how hard we try sometimes it is so easy to allow the flesh to overcome us and to want what others have, and in doing so we so often overlook the blessings the Lord has already bestowed upon us.

It is so hard for me too at times because so often I want to “have my cake and eat it too” so to speak. You see, my husband and I have made a CHOICE to have me stay home with my son so that I can be his primary care giver and when the time comes for school we will home school, so clearly I make $0 salary and we live off of what he makes. This is fine, this is what I always wanted and we have come to know and accept (he is better at this than I am) that our lives will not look like other peoples lives. We won’t be able to take the vacations, buy the clothes, or have the cars and homes that other people have, but we discussed, weighted, and decided that we would rather have me home with my son, and our other kids when they come along then having all of those things. “WHAT’S YOUR POINT LADY?!?” My point is that although we have made this decision, and are at peace with this choice, I still struggle at times with envy. Before, any one wants to jump in and say well then get a part-time job, work when he is home or anything else, I want to be clear that I believe this is a heart issue and even if I was working I truly believe there would always be something that came along that I wanted that would be out of our price range and what not. I am so quick to look at the things I want and think that I need and so slow to count up all my blessings and I lose focus on Him in it all. As I am writing this I am reminded of Matthew 6 when Jesus says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.‘”  I am so blessed by this verse because it reminds me that my riches and wealth are not here, but are in the Kingdom of heaven. The things of this world will fade away, but His kingdom is forever. So, here are some verses about envy, and what God, and His Word says about envy and why it is such a deadly sin.

Proverbs 14:30

“A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.”

James 3:16

“For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”

1 Corinthians 3:3

“For you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?”

Galatians 5:19-21

“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Galatians 5:26

“Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”

Proverbs 24:1

“Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them,”

These are just some of the verses that speak to envy and what The Word, and therefore the LORD has to say on it.

I hope this has helped you understand a little more about envy and what the Lord has to say about it!

Stay tuned, tomorrow I will be writing on another one!

  1. Hey lady 🙂 if you think about it on the flipside too, there may be some who are envious of your situation! Wishing that they could be home with their little ones. That is such a blessing! I totally see how much of a sacrifice it is.
She keeps an eye on everyone in her household,
and keeps them all busy and productive.
    Her children respect and bless her;
her husband joins in with words of praise:
“Many women have done wonderful things,
    but you’ve outclassed them all!”
Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.
The woman to be admired and praised
is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.
You are fulfilling your purpose in so many ways! And your little man gets his mommy every day! That’s just so awesome to me! ❤ ❤

  2. I love this post. I’m slowing working daily scripture into our son’s life. We read daily and pray but we haven’t had a scripture of the week yet and I want to start that next month when he turns 2 so this is perfect for us/our needs.

    1. I love that your going to do that with your son. I can’t wait to do the same with my son when he is a little older and more verbal and able to understand what we are doing! So glad you liked this post and hope you will keep reading as I continue the series!

  4. So how can we? Can we accomplish this and get it out of our way never to see or feel it again? Is it possible to do in and of our flesh?
Yes it is, for Envy, not for all for some and others not. While another deadly sin crowds in, and besets us
Ex: Take the Seven deadly sins and call each one an Apple
Take Seven apples put them in the bathtub and fill the tub full of water:
Now the task to hold all (seven deadly sins) Apples under the water at the same time.
Can anyone do this? Has anyone ever done this, besides Christ?
So in Christ your pinch hitter is this done for you to walk as he walk in love to all?
If ones focus is on Sin, (whether one wants to or not) what is always the result? More sin and guilt or boastfulness over not doing it anymore, and neither of those are from God are they
No humility in guilt or pride is there?

Just food for thought to grow in this amazing forgiveness from Father by Son, where it is all done, for our new life in Spirit and truth dead to flesh accomplishments
Thanks to those that hear, and those that don’t yet

      1. So elated over God doing the teaching and not man, all we can do is share and trust god to reveal
Hebrews 8:11Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

11 and they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
