Well guys, this is the last deadly sin, greed. This post is another one where I went looking for images and over 95% of the images for greed that popped up were of money. While it is true that money has a lot to do with greed, it is so much more than wanting more and more money, and in many ways ties in with envy. We want more partly because we see the new things others have and Want them as well. Even if you have a nice new IPhone 5 you see the IPhone 6 commercial and all the sudden you are wanting to go out and buy that one instead. So, time to do what I’ve done each time now.
Greed: Intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food(first response when you Google “define greed”).
Well, could you ever imagine what would ever be so sinful about having selfish desires?!?! Just about everything! For starters, as a follower of Christ we are called to a life of selfLESSness and we are supposed to desire nothing more than we desire a relationship with the Lord. Now, we are all still sinners and struggle with the desires of the flesh so we will never be truly selfless, but we are to strive to live a life that is holy and glorifying to Him and I truly believe in order to do that we must try our best to be like Christ and give up earthly possessions, and DAILY pick up our cross.
What does the Word say about greed?
“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.”
“A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched.”
“‘No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
“And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.'”
1 Timothy 6:9
“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.”
1 John 2:16
“For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
“You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”
In reading what the Word says and reflecting upon greed and why this sin is so destructive I am reminded of and take comfort in Philippians 4:11-12 which says, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.” It is such a humbling verse and one that kind of brings me to a reality that I should be content in all situations of my life, I so often find reasons to gripe and things to need, but I should be so content in my situation and trust and lean upon the Lord knowing full well what Jeremiah 29:11 promises and that He knows and does what is best for His children in accordance to His will. It’s only by His help and guidance through the Holy Spirit that I will ever be able to truly be content in life and with the things He has given me.
I feel like I should close this post and series in prayer.
Thank you for your Word and for the wisdom and guidance that it brings when You open our ears and prepare our hearts to read and receive your Word. Lord, we know what your Word says in regards to the 7 deadly sins and we know how You would have us respond to Your Word. Lord, I pray that You would come along side us and show us what it looks like to live in obedience and in accordance to Your Word. Lord, use Your Holy Spirit within us to guide us and convict us where needed. I also pray for those who are unbelievers who have read these posts and as a result have read what YOU have to say on these issues. Lord, if it be Your will, I pray that you would open their ears and prepare their hearts to read and accept not my words but YOURS as truth and I pray that You would work and move in them so that they might come to know You personally today. Lord, You are so good and loving and You care about us and I am so grateful for it all. Lord move in me, move in us, so that we might honor and glorify you.
It is in Your Holy and Mighty name I pray,
