I was thinking about the correlation between a parent and their child and our Lord and Savior and those who follow Him, His children I was thinking about how some people might think that we should be afraid of God or God wants us to be afraid or scared into submission. I think that’s wrong and I don’t believe that is how my Savior would want us to feel about Him. Let me be clear, I think that God can be scary and one to be feared, that those who do not know Him should be afraid and very much scared because His wrath is real, and His wrath is not something to be toyed with, however those who are inside of His promise and know Him as their Heavenly Father, as Abba Father have fear erased and are met with love and compassion and forgiveness when they meet Him with a repentant heart. So as a daughter in Christ I know that I do not have to fear Him because He loves me so much He was willing to send His one and only Son to earth to live a perfect life, take upon ALL the sins of the world and die upon a wooden cross, the wrath of God upon Him so that we could not die but have eternal life. That is who MY GOD is, not someone I cower at the thought of but someone I speak of with pride welling inside of me and admiring awe.
1 John 4:18
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love”
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'”
I think it’s safe to say that none of us have ever experienced perfect love on earth and will never experience such love from one another on earth because it is just not possible…..We are all imperfect and are incapable of loving someone wholeheartedly, and selflessly 24/7, 365. The only perfect love we ever have the hope of experiencing is through knowing our Lord and Savior and having a relationship with Him through Word, prayer, and fellowship. As 1 John 4:18 says, “perfect love casts out fear” which can only come from the Lord.
I am not scared of My GOD, I respect Him and I try to obey His commands and Word because of all that He has done for me and the love that I have been shown. My God is many things, but He is not someone who commands respect and obedience by hoarding over us with fear and threats. Like a loving mother and father, His Word and His commands are for our own good and are all to serve a greater purpose: to honor and glorify Him.
I’m sorry, I was done with what I was saying but I feel like I need to add one more thing:
While I am not scared of my God I do believe in having a healthy fear and reverence for Him and I believe it is what helps lead us into obedience. I did not want to completely dismiss the need for us to have a healthy reverence and fear of the Lord.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.“
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.“
“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.“
The Word is clear about a healthy fear of the Lord, but I do not believe that He would have us be scared of Him or follow Him only out of fear. I believe that He wants more from us, He wants us to do it out of love for Him.
